Point and Repair is a design prototype for a new augmented reality (AR) experience which would help you to upcycle your belongings. By pointing to or scanning a piece of damaged or worn furniture, you would actually be able to engage it in a conversation about how it could be upgraded or fixed. Different solutions would be suggested depending on the type of damage; ranging from upcycling tutorials to assistance in ordering specific parts for something, instead of replacing an entire product.

Point and Repair would offer users access to easy and affordable solutions regarding upcycling furniture, while simultaneously encouraging sustainable and circular consumption. Being able to repair components and parts rather than opting to purchase new furniture encourages a sustainable attitude in the home, and provides an opportunity to further understand how things we surround ourselves with are made.

Random Studio investigated three areas for this concept: visual search, recognising damage, and three-dimensional (3D) visual support. To show people how to fix a wobbly closet, it could be helpful to show them where all the nuts and bolts are directly on the object. To do that, they would identify the object and how it is posed in space in order to then overlay a 3D model of the object on top of it. If the 3D model also has all relevant details like nuts and bolts as discrete parts of it, these can then be highlighted individually to let people see where they are.
