What if you could rearrange your home from the couch?

Built by — Random Studio

Random is an experience design studio based in Amsterdam. We are artists, designers and engineers who follow a research-led approach, exploring new connections between people and brands to service experiences that trigger a sense of wonder.

Home Puzzle is a design prototype for an app which invites you to quickly play around with the objects in your room. By scanning your space, you could not only select the objects you’d like to reposition in terms of rearranging the furniture, but also select fun "zero gravity" or "snow globe" functions to playfully reimagine the possibilities of your home. All from the comfort of your couch.

'During our research we quickly found out how important the right layout for your living space is. We believe Home Puzzle would help people to make home rearrangement not only easier, but also more inspiring.'

The experiment would use LiDAR technology to scan the room and object recognition to detect the objects in the space. Based on the information it gathers, it would then create a miniature version of your room and the furniture located in it which would give you the opportunity to try some different arrangements you may never have imagined before. A combination of diminished reality (DR) and photogrammetry would allow you to see the room change, right in front of your eyes.

'Home rearrangement is a good exercise in how to refresh our daily surroundings. If it’s just to try something new or because events in our lives force us to. But what works best for you and how can we make this exercise as effortless as possible?'

—Random Studio

Home Puzzle would make the rearranging of furniture more appealing, less frustrating, and almost effortless. It would make experimenting with multiple ideas more simple, and would open up discussion with other people to involve them in your ideas for new arrangements. The technology used in creating Home Puzzle would be augmented reality (AR), visual search/object detection, LiDAR scanning and an algorithm to generate a layout.

'We hope it will inspire you to try out new ideas more often and adjust your environment to your situation. With regards to more of us working from home, we hope people can be more conscious of how they plan their space.'
